| There
is no particular bike that is better than another. They all
do the same job. It comes down to your own choice, preference,
style, comfort, performance, economy, and luggage capacity.
A good example is our own choice of bike. We tested quite a
few models and brands that included Japanese, Italian and German
bikes. We then narrowed it down to a Honda Varadero. We decided,
however, to stick with Honda for its reliability and comfort
(nothing can beat heated grips) so we finally chose the Varadero.
If you are not sure which bike to use for touring, the best
way to go about it is to talk to other bike owners, dealers
and friends and also to test ride as many different models as
possible…..and remember your pillion (whoever it is -
in my case, my wife) who has a very important say in your choice
of bike. If she or he is not comfortable you will hear all about
it in no time at all! |

| As
far as equipment goes, it is very personal but over the years
we have tried and tested a variety of gear. On some occasions
we have toured wearing helmets costing just £70/£80
and on other occasions we have worn ones worth hundreds of pounds.
As long as your helmet is not damaged, fits your head and is
approved by the motorcycle safety organisations you will be
fine. Last year I discovered that Schuberth and Caberg both
manufacture helmets fitted with a retractable visor for sun
protection. This is very handy when riding through road tunnels
when you don’t have time to take your sunglasses off.
We personally prefer to ride wearing leathers. It is, however,
not the most practical kit because you can spend lots of time
putting your waterproofs on and off in unsettled weather. There
can also be a problem with the temperature and you can end up
either too hot or you are freezing. If you are thinking of investing
in protective clothing you might consider All Weather gear.
It is much more practical and comfortable. Since we started
our touring business we only used Hein
Gericke clothing. There is a good range of equipment, it
is competitively priced and the brand has exceptional customer
service. All the equipment is designed with the purpose and
not just for the image. Lately they employed a female designer
to accommodate the needs of female rides as well. There is no
need to spend a fortune on biking gear. The only thing we would
recommend is a set of hard panniers, because whatever weather
you happen to encounter your luggage will always be dry. A tank
bag is also invaluable for displaying maps and itineraries and
for quick access to personal items (travel documents, camera,
spectacles etc) whilst on the road. |
